As
mentioned in the last SISLETS Newsletter mail-out:
The
likely reality for SISLETS – like most volunteer-run groups – is that it will
not be able to continue into the future, expand and grow if it relies solely on
one or two individuals to do all the work to keep the system going. With the
recent change to CES we now have an opportunity to share the responsibility of
running the system. The CES System is also very straightforward and easy to use
for everyone. It contains comprehensive
information about how the system works and how to use it.
For
the new system to work effectively some changes in SISLETS are necessary. Your
help/assistance in making this new system work will be greatly appreciated.
Please note the following changes:
1. TRANSACTIONS:
Sellers are responsible for processing (in-putting) their
transactions into the CES system. The system ONLY accepts seller transactions –
not buyer transactions – so it’s difficult to ‘put in’ an incorrect
transaction. If you undertake a transaction with a member negotiate with them
who will ensure the transaction is processed into the CES System. Sending
trading slips to SISLETS for the Co-ordinator to process will be phased out.
2. TRADING
STATEMENTS: Individual statements to members will no longer be included
with the SISLETS Newsletter. Copies of your trading statement can be obtained
directly from the CES system. To cut
down on costs and labour time trading statements will be issued to individual
members on written request only to SISLETS for a fee of 5 units (limit of 2
issued per year).
3. OFFERS
AND WANTS (Resource Guide): The CES System contains a ‘Resource Guide’
facility in the form of ‘Offers’ and ‘Wants’ sections. The paper copy of the Resource Guide will be
replaced with this on-line system. Copies can be printed out from the system
when required and you can update your information whenever you wish.
4. SISLETS
NEWSLETTER: Will continue to be published bi-monthly and mailed out to all
financial members. It will provide a means for all members (with or without
internet access) to find out what’s happening in SISLETS and to advertise to
other members. Each newsletter will
contain a membership list so that everyone has access to current member contact
details. See page one for 2007 closing dates for submissions to the Newsletter.
Accessing the CES System: Every
member was issued with an individual password in the last Newsletter mail-out –
you will need this password to access your account via www.ces.org.za If you do not know or have lost your
password you’ll need to re-apply in writing to SISLETS for a copy. When you
first access your trading account please change your password to one of your
own choice.
Continued overleaf…..
If you do not have a Computer or Internet access:
If you do not
own a computer and are not able to do your own on-line accounting here are some
options:
a.Libraries
and Inter-net Cafes have facilities for accessing the internet, emailing etc.
b.Ask
friends, family, kids (who have computers) to do your accounting for you and
access your account. Don’t forget
they’ll need to know your password to do this.
c.
Enlist the help of another
member in LETS to do your accounting for
you and print out your trading statement, etc. (offer to pay them in units or
part units/cash). They can also print out a current ‘Offers and Wants’ list for
you at the same time. Some members on email have already accessed and are using
the on-line system. Check SISLETS’
membership list for members who have email access or ask for assistance
in the next SISLETS newsletter. Offers of assistance from on-line members able
to help in this area would be appreciated.
Please Note: SISLETS does not currently have anyone
responsible for processing and organising accounting. Your individual help to
ease the workload by using the CES system is therefore appreciated. Anyone
willing to help out with the general accounting and other computer work please
contact SISLETS.
Do
you have a current email address?
Email
access will keep you up-to-date and informed about changes and activities in
SISLETS.
Please
send your new/current email address to SISLETS:
(Note:
Some members’ emails are being returned to SisLETS. – please help us keep our
records up-to-date by sending your current email address to SISLETS).
Using
the CES
On-Line
System
The CES system contains instructions on how
to use the various aspects of the system. However some people have asked for
specifics on how to access the most important information, i.e. processing a
transaction or printing a statement. So we hope this helps!

Forum
Successful LETS trading is based upon members meeting each other and
developing friendships, trust and mutual
understanding. I have often noticed members reluctant to trade or initiate
contact with another member because of unfamiliarity. Plus, sometimes people
find it difficult to get to the market to socialise and meet people. I thought
an opportunity to introduce yourself to other group members via the Newsletter
may help break the ice. It’s also an opportunity for you to advertise your
‘wares’ and maybe get the help or goods you are looking for. You never know!
Please send in your personal
‘introduction’ – it doesn’t matter whether you are a ‘new’ or ‘old’ member – everyone is encouraged to make themselves
known!
Page 10 of this Newsletter offers suggested
guidelines for your Members Forum (for those of us who may be a bit
tongue-tied) – but feel free to establish your own criteria if you want. …..Pam

How long
have you been in SISLETS? I joined in
1998 and became Co-ordinator soon afterwards. Previous to that I was a founding
member of
Who are
you? I’m
the main contact person for SISLETS – I handle new joinees, put together the
newsletter, etc. I run the Café at the
markets with the help of Dianne.
Work/Hobbies/Interests
or anything else about yourself I run my own business called The
Self-Sufficiency Shoppe – which includes running environmental workshops for
local councils and community centres, sale of products and publications about
becoming self-sufficient or self-reliant and environmentally responsible (mainly by mail-order or via local Shoppe
Distributors), plus a few other ‘off-shoots’. I have a web-site: www.theshoppe.com.au
My main area of interest that instigated The Shoppe and workshops is
that I enjoy writing and have been doing so for some 30 years. I couldn’t find
a publisher at the time so instead published my own material which has worked
out more profitable!
Interests? Besides writing - I love animals and I care for stray
animals (particularly cats) and have a menagerie of pets – all of whom I
absolutely love! I cannot bear to eat
animals – so I’m vegetarian. I love
gardening – particularly vegetable gardening – and often have excess produce to
get rid of. I am also interested in the future – the earth, the environment and
earth changes & science. I love music and have a large collection of modern
rock/pop type music. Oh yes – I’m single
and happy!
LETS
Activity:
I offer my Shoppe’s activities on LETS – such as its publications,
workshops, etc. on part cash/unit basis.
I also offer garden produce when in season. I have a slow combustion
stove – so I’m always wanting wood. I
have just found someone in LETS to do upgrades on my website – so I’m pleased
with that!
Why you
joined LETS – has it filled your expectations? I joined LETS to make living on
a low income easier – and it has worked for me.
I believe that LETS is yet to see is greatest success – as the money
situation intensifies and prices rise people will be more ‘motivated’ to look
at alternative ways to trading. LETS is a means of ‘escape’ from the confines
of ‘money’. However to make LETS work
you have to put in effort and time to build relationships and contacts.
Anything
else you’d like to tell people? I’ve been
SISLETS Co-ordinator for nearly 9 years. I spend many hours of my time working
on LETS doing a lot of behind the scenes work that people probably do not
realise I do. I often take over tasks
and jobs when other people leave or decide they no longer want to do it for the
sake of keeping the System going. I need a rest and plan to move on this year
and hand over the job to other people.

Milton - SISA0024
How long have I been in SISLETS? Well,
I’m member number SI24, so I guess you were a little girl then. I joined possibly
before computers came of age.
Who are you? I’m the
really shy chap who likes to hug people and read books. I’m usually at SISLETS
markets, and I’m a long-time active Committee member who edits our
publications, eats Pauline’s wonderful cakes, and enjoys other members’
company.
Work, hobbies, interests or anything else about
yourself: I like traveling fast and comprehensively to
different places, so I’ve been through about 120 of the world’s approx. 193
countries. I have written 20 books, with the biggest being ‘Against RAA
Insurance’ and, after I was given a ‘free’ trip to
I won a Messenger Press prize for being
I enjoy rock music, and own about 500 CDs (not at
home). I’ve taken over 10,000 slides, and now create CDs of my many digital
camera shots. Naturally, I like Christianity, sex and jokes. I email several
thousand jokes and funny pictures to friends each year, and collect theme all.
I also create a fascinating fortnightly well-being bulletin, being proud of
this collection, which I’m happy to give to people on CD.
As I read about 200 books each year, and other
activities, I’m annoyed that I don’t have the time to get more involved in
SISLETS because it really benefits people who get involved. The more we
interact, the better our lives improve.
SISLETS activity: I’ve
mentioned that above, so if you’ve forgotten, you have short-term memory loss,
or are not concentrating. I’m really after pre-1990 Reader’s Digests and am
happy to trade them for hugs or units or both.
Why did you join SISLETS? Has it filled your
expectations? As soon as I read the 14 principles of LETS I
instantly joined because people with integrity are hard to find, and so should
be treasured. I expected members to answer their phone, but was surprised to
find that half of you have answering machines. I’ve had a steady level of
trading over the years, and I enjoy reading the Resource Guide.
Anything else you’d like to tell people?
Oh, you’ve read this far have you?! I don’t think money is that important in
life. A workmate invested $64,000 in the share market 18 months ago and it’s
now worth over $300,000. I’m not jealous because I’m content within myself. I’m
just a regular guy. I only have one life and I am very short of time to achieve
my many goals, such as renovating my home. SISLETS shows me that we all have
talents, and it is wonderful to share them. Love to you all.

How long have I been in SISLETS? For
2 years & 2 months
About Me:
I am nearly always at the SISLETS market every month and most people know me as
"the card lady". I sell a large range of handmade gift cards at the
markets along with other knick-knacks and items that I no longer need or use. I
also sell my cards at numerous places around
I always try to have a smile on my face and love
going to the Market each month as it gives me an opportunity to mix with other
members of my community whom I normally have no contact.
Since joining LETS I have saved a large amount of
money buying things I need with units and cash i.e. haircuts, gifts, fresh
fruit/veg and also buy things that I may not need but buy anyway...lol!!!
Besides the savings I have made I have developed
friendships and relationships with many of the members in SISLETS and that has
enriched my life.

How Long Have you Been In LETS?: I first joined when living in
Who Are You?: Ex-teacher, active retired, mother of six,
grandmother of sixteen (at last count) and great-grandmother of three. My forte in SISLETS has become sewing and
mending for which there seems to be a continual demand. Read my other offerings
in the Resource Guide.
Work/Hobbies/Interests: My life
experiences of work are many and varied starting with my very first job selling
Xmas cards in the Xmas rush, canning apricots in a factory, selling fish door
to door in country towns, teaching dressmaking to adult students, teaching
primary grades in an open class situation of grades four to seven in a private
school, two years of special education, processing seafood, teaching years two
and three in the ACE system and being a house mother in a Student Group Home
operated by Frontier Services. Currently I am involved in house sitting for
friends and others, both here and interstate where I enjoy the animal contact
that I don’t have at home.
LETS Activity: I am
always happy to take unwanted lemons and produce of most kinds when there is a
glut. I hate to see things going to
waste, even craft projects that never got finished.
Why I Joined LETS?: I saw it as an extension of the federal system
of currency, encouraging a greater interaction between members of a community
with their varying skills. Like many human activities it falls short of the
ideal because of the propensity of some to use the system to their own
advantage without contributing much, if anything. But, because of the integrity of many
members, I am happy to continue my association with it and them.
Anything Else?: Commercial
interaction is highly dependent on trust. That’s why you keep going to your
favourite doctor, hairdresser, dressmaker, etc. You get to know them and they
you. This is why that trust needs to be built up between members of LETS so
that we can deal with each other confidently. Hence, this Member Forum.
